The generosity of companies like KURU shoes makes the difference in providing for the needs of the hungry and homeless, and those struggling throughout our local communities.
Salt Lake City Mission held their Annual Labor Day “Birthday Celebration for the Homeless” on September 3 at Pioneer Park. The mission served over a thousand meals to the hungry and homeless, celebrated with cake for everyone, gave out 250 backpacks, 350 hygiene kits, and distributed hundreds of items of clothing..
“It is a privileged honor every year when family and friends gather to celebrate your birthday. But for many of the homeless they haven’t celebrated one in years. We had fun and just really loved on folks and shared an awesome time of fellowship while meeting their greatest needs. We want to make sure the homeless know that people care, and that there is someone they can turn to when they are struggling and need help”, said Pastor Joe Vazquez, Co-Director of Salt Lake City Mission.
Salt Lake City Mission would like to thank community partners that helped in hosting an encouraging and successful Labor Day event: KURU shoes, Sam’s Club, Utah Food Bank, The University of Utah, CleanTheWorld, and Catholic Community Services of Utah.
A highlight of the event was provided by KURU shoes as we gave out over 500 pairs of new men’s and women’s shoes to people WHO REALLY NEED THEM!
A most touching encounter, due to the generosity of the people of KURU, happened when a homeless man named Daniel came up to Pastor Joe crying. He said, “Thank you so much for the new shoes. I just had my toes amputated because of my diabetes and I had been trying to find a new pair of comfortable shoes”. What a touching moment. Daniel said he had been praying to replace his shoes that had holes and falling a part.. Community partners play an important role in making a lasting difference in the lives of the hungry and homeless.
“As we (Salt Lake City Mission) head into our “Season of Hope” in the next few months, hosting nine major events to feed the hungry and homeless, providing holiday food boxes to our struggling neighbors throughout the Salt Lake region – we know that partnerships with many from the community will be a major contributing factor in genuinely providing for those this holiday season.” Says Pastor Joe.
