Salt Lake City Mission’s

10th Annual Women’s Hygiene Product Drive

1. For many women and girls experiencing homelessness and poverty, having a period is a nightmare.
2. Feminine hygiene products can’t be purchased with food stamps.
3. Tampons and sanitary pads are costly to purchase for those with limited or no means.
4. Homeless women and girls often improvise by using napkins from fast-food restaurants, newspaper or other unsanitary items.
5. Using unsanitary items can result in toxic shock syndrome, other serious health concerns.
Unfortunately, menstruation is still a taboo subject. One of those topics considered unspeakable because people are either embarrassed or think others will look at them in a shameful way. There is a lack of awareness and support making it a serious health problem.
Hygiene, in general, for women who are homeless or living on a restricted budget often can’t afford the proper personal care items they need. And as a mother with children, it is even harder when you have to do what is needed to feed and care for your family while struggling month after month on a limited income.

Homeless women typically know where to find a safe place to sleep or a hot meal to eat. But when it comes to taking care of their feminine hygiene needs, they often have nowhere to turn.

Being unclean can lead to serious infections. It’s a desperate situation that many disadvantaged women feel resigned to accept. We can change that right here in Utah
